Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF)

Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion

The extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) is one of the many interbody fusions that can be done to the spine. It is a procedure that allows neurosurgeons to take a unique approach to the spine. It can be used to treat conditions such as spondylolisthesis, severe lumbar spondylosis, lumbar radiculopathy and scoliosis. As the name suggests, we are able to enter the spine from a lateral (or side) approach allowing for better access to the disc space and being able to address the spine pathology that is present. There are several advantages to this approach:

  • Smaller incision
  • Minimal tissue damage/disruption
  • Better access to the disc space than traditional approaches
  • Minimal post-operative pain/discomfort
  • Quicker recovery after surgery

When indicated, this procedure can be life-changing for the patient. Please consult with your Inland Neurosurgery Institute (INI) neurosurgeon as to whether this option is appropriate for you.
