Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS)
VNS technology is aimed to help patients with a seizure disorder (epilepsy) that is not properly controlled using medications. VNS implantation is not a cure for epilepsy/seizures. The surgeon exposes the patient’s Vagus nerve through a small incision on the neck and wraps a small electrode around this nerve. Then, a second incision is made below the collar bone and the electrode is attached to a battery unit (‘a pulse generator’). This battery then stimulates the Vagus nerve which sends the stimulation all the way back to many centers of the brain involved in slowing the frequency of seizures. The surgeons at INI are proud to offer this technology to their patient to help better control their medication-resistant seizures.
